OURI is pleased to offer the following workshops during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. Encourage your friends to join you as well! OURI Workshop Schedule
All workshops are about 45-60 minutes long and will be hosted in person (some may offer a hybrid option - check the schedule for more information).
Workshop Descriptions
How to Get Started in Research and Inquiry:
This workshop, offered each month, will discuss the beginning steps on how to get started in undergraduate research and inquiry, including what is research, how to get involved, how to contact faculty members, and much more!
Contacting Professors:
This workshop will explain the importance of effective communication when contacting potential faculty mentors. Students will learn how to select an appropriate faculty mentor and how to contact them to begin research projects.
Research Ethics:
Students will learn a historical perspective about projects that require research compliance through the Division of Research and the roads to take to conduct ethical research.
Life Hacks for Undergraduate Researchers:
Students will learn useful tips to succeed in undergraduate research and academic course loads.
Students will gain valuable advice that will be used throughout their time at FAU, and in life after graduation.
How to Apply for Undergraduate Research Grants:
This workshop will explore grant opportunities for undergraduate students offered through OURI.
Students will also receive information on how to apply through Survey Monkey Apply, learn about application deadlines, requirements, and much more!
Attending a Conference:
Topics will include identifying appropriate conferences in your discipline, submitting an abstract, funding opportunities, getting the most from your conference experience, networking, and appropriately representing your institution.
Summer Research Experience:
Students will learn about different summer research opportunities available to Undergraduate researchers through OURI and how to fund external summer opportunities and Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs).
Creating a Poster and Oral Presentation:
Students will be assisted in the process of creating a poster and oral research presentation,just in time for the annual OURI Undergraduate Research Symposium!
Mock Poster/Oral Presentation:
Students will have the opportunity to practice their presentations by preparing and presenting a mock oral or poster presentation from beginning to end. There will be an audience to provide students the opportunity to practice and answer questions the audience may have at the end of the presentation.
Preparing for Graduate School:
Students will learn how to prepare for graduate school from the freshman to senior academic years. Topics covered will consist of financial aid, testing, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and more!

Developing an Effective CV/Resume, hosted by the Career Center:
Resume/CV and cover letter need some updating? Let us help! This presentation will help increase your understanding of how your CV/resume and cover letter are used in the job search process and make sure you target your career goals. You will learn how to compose a resume that reflects your greatest strengths and talents and explore different resume formats. By the end of this presentation, your CV/resume will say, "interview me!"
LinkedIn 101, hosted by the Career Center:
Learn how to create a professional LinkedIn profile and effectively use LinkedIn as a job search and networking tool by attending an interactive workshop. You will receive a brief overview of how to utilize LinkedIn, see examples of complete LinkedIn profiles, then be able to build your profile. You are welcome to be on your laptops/tablets during the workshop.
(Offered Occasionally) Data Interpretation – Understanding the Method and Results Sections of a Research Article:
A common practice in reviewing researcharticles is reading the Introduction and then skipping tothe Discussion section.However, the Method and Resultssections often contain valuable informationthat is critical totruly understanding the research. The purpose of thispresentation is to highlight andinterpret the contentsof the Method and Results sections.The contents of current research articles will be explained and interpreted in an easy-to-understand fashion.
